19.5.09 09:51 ( , , , )

Thanks to the upnp2mrtpg script I'm now monitoring my Fritzbox.

Also, I upgrade from mediawiki 1.11 to 1.14, and as usual, everything went smooth. It took 5 minutes including download, mysql update and first test. As I don't have any special adaptation (compared to other people I know) I had nothing to patch. I just checked that https is still working (was, because it's apache configuration and has nothing to do with mediawiki).
Finally I installed few more plugins I got used to: fckeditor, syntax highlighter. Still have to test file indexer.

24.7.08 09:57 Nokia 6230i ActiveSync problem ( , , , )

I use my old Nokia 6230i as car phone (Mercedes bluetooth adapter for e65 was above 400€ and didn't work very well: only contacts on the SIM were visible, not contacts stored on the phone) with a dual SIM card. This works great, except that from time to time I have to take the phone out of the car and sync it with Outlook to have the latest contact list on it.

Few weeks ago syncing didn't work. Several people on THE NET (TM) had the same problem. Many of them suggested to switch to an older version of PC suite, as the last one doesn't work correctly with 6230i.

I found out that the clock of the phone was not set. After setting it the synchronization did work, no need to update/downgrade PCSuite. So if you have a sync problem, first check your clock.

5.7.08 14:08 Le Tour 2008 ( , , , )

The Tour started today in Brest.

Whatever happened during last years (doping), for me (as a (mountain) biker) the intensive effort they do during 3 weeks is still very impressive (however they are 10 km/h faster or slower with or without dopoing, they still have the effort).

Medien:
ZDF is sending a live stream, as well as a good ticker (animation, text ticker, info). Live ticker von Yahoo.

Favoriten 2008
(laut RP online): Frank Schläck, Denis mentschow, Carlos Sastre, Andy Schleck, Markus Fothen (ein Deutscher ist auch dabei), Kim kirschen (wäre im zu gönen), Damiano Cunego, Cadel Evans (mein persönlicher Tip), Alejandro Valverde, Heimar Zubeldia.

Wer wer gewinnt das grüne Trikot? Erik Zabel mit 38? Mangels Komkurenz denkbar.

26.6.08 00:36 Turkey-Germany ( , , , )

Congratulations to Turkey for a very good game.

Of course I'm lucky that at the end Germany won (I'm half German), but Turkey was a very strong opponent and would have deserve to go into the Euro 2008 final as well.

22.6.08 19:49 Das Wunder von Basel ( , , , )

Ich bin zurück aus Basel. Alles lief perfekt.

25.5.08 22:54 Kultur Wochenende ( , , , )

Heute in Picasso on the Move gewesen. Sehr beeindruckend.

13.5.08 20:20 Skandal!!! ( , , , )

... was da in Myanmar passiert.

30.4.08 23:52 Days off ( , , , )

I have some days off, so time to have a life aside work :-)
  • went to my first 3 stars restaurant yesterday evening (Erfort). Expensive, but very good (food, service, athmosphere..)
  • installed ubuntu 8.04 on my laptop (wubi). I'm a long term OpenSuse/KDE user (since around Suse 6.x), so... but Ubuntu runs well. The panel is freezing sometimes, and it feels a little bit slow (2.6.24 kernel...could be never), but hardware detection is great, wireless networking solved very good, bluetooth/3d desktop effects intergration nice.
  • drove to Aachen today to visit a friend. Watched Chelsea-Liverpool (3:2) together. Great match. English teams rocks.
  • not sure were I will go next. Maybe to Düsseldorf ...
  • can't still do no sport because of my ligament rupture (2 1/2 weeks ago). Maybe I will try to cycle a little bit next week end
  • finally Java 6 on Mac (Intel 64 only).

20.4.08 22:07 IT changes ( , , , )

This weekend I switched my entire phone an internet access from Deutsche Telekom to 1&1.

I don't have any longer a fixed line phone access, but will use only voip in the future. I not convinced that voip is running without problem, but it's the future and as I don't use the fixed line a lot I don't care.

I took a
FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN 7270 with the 1&1 access, and this greatly reduce my IT setup.

The following devices have been removed:
  • Linksys WRTG and Telekom WLAN router (I used 2 to cover my entire appartment, one was not enough)
  • Linksys VoiP box
  • Telekom DSL splitter and Mode
  • Euracom PBX
  • network switch

New devices:
  • FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN
    • the WLAN covers my entire apartment so I don't need the switch and no second WLAN access point
    • it's a PBX, no need for additonal PBX
    • I can connect my ISDN phone (S0) and my 2 DECT phones directly to it (no need for DECT station)
    • it has build in VoiP functionality so I don't need the
  • New DSL splitter

Everything is working so far (Internet with port mapping to my server, WPA2 protected WLAN (2nd PC, my Laptop and my mobile phone, both DECT phones), except the Voip connection to 1&1. My Sipgate account is working, but it looks like my 1&1 account is not activated yet.

Internet was supposed te be switched tomorrow, I wonder why it is already working. Maybe it's still going over the Telekom lines and somehow connects to 1&1.

5.12.07 21:35 Soccer, traveling, handball, tech days ( , , , )

I had few nice and not so nice events during last 2 weeks:
  • Drove to Frankfort to watch the soccer game Germany-Wales. Very Boring, still at the end borth Wales and German supporters were singing together "England going home..." :-)
  • Spend a nice week-end by a friend in Düsseldorf (Nachtresidenz)
  • Watched the handball game Germany-Saarland in Saarbrücken (the city where I'm living). Pretty cool, but too expensive (32€)
  • Spend 3 days at the SUN TechDays 2007 in Francfort. I will blog about it later. Saw few people I hadn't seen for a long time (my ex-girlfriend, my cousin and a friend, with whom I had a nice dinner in the Heilligeist/Mainz).

L'automne est bien arrivé. 9°, pluies.

9.10.07 18:16 Selling a car in Germany ( , , , )

I had a car accident two weeks ago. Mercifully it wasn't my fault and the insurance paid for my car. But the damage on my care was to big to repair it, so I had to sell it and try to get the best price I could.

There are two big private (and dealer) car sale platform in Germany: autoscout24 and mobile.de.
I first advertised the car in autouscout24 but had only few calls in the first 3 days. Then I advertised it in mobile.de and got at least 10 calls per day. Hopefully I will finally sell the car tomorrow.
Anyway, it looks like that mobile.de is watched by much more people (at least professional dealers looking for damaged cars) then autoscout24.

6.4.07 18:04 Strato IMAP... ( , , , )

... or how to loose 6 months of email.

Beginning of 2006 I was happy to discover that my e-mail (and domain) provider (Strato) offers IMAP access. Middle of 2006 I changed all my e-mail accesses (home PC, laptop...) to IMAP. Everything was fine. During the next months, I also moved all important mails received on web.de (which I use as public spam filter account) to the Strato inbox. Same for emails that I did send.

Everything looked fine, but few weeks ago I discovered that old mails disappeared from my inbox (sent folder was alright) and I started checking all my e-mail applications (check that "delete mails older than..." is disabled and so on).

Today, I took the time to read the Strato FAQ on strato desk, and there I found my problem:

In short: mails in the inbox, older than 60 days, are automatically deleted. Mails in other folders are not. :-(

I have now created a new inbox folder and moved all files there. As it is an own folder (and not the strato inbox account inbox folder), mails will not (hope so) be deleted. I will use it instead of the original one.

What I've learned: always read the fine print (actually I'm not sure if the limitation did exist when I started using it, and also not if it is written somewhere except the FAQ).

26.3.07 09:09 WeekEnd ( , , , )

  • Played 2 soccer tournaments. One from the rudder club (Sunday) and one against racism (Saturday). Strange enough, the team I played with on rudder club tournament had far more foreigners (including me, Romania,Zimbabwe,Tunisia) than on the tournament against racism.
  • Checked Apache Derby and like it a lot. It's easy to setup and use, and the documentation is impressive. Will have to check out in which project I could use it.
  • Found out that there is an ISO 9660 backend (loopy) for commons vfs. Wrote a small application which embeds jetty and loopy which can be used to browse ISO images containing web pages. Seems that loopy is not working (at least current commons vfs) correctly. I can browse the directory structure, but when attempting to get the content of a FileObject I get an IllegalStateException. Application is working fine with ZIP files containing web pages.
  • Saw the Harlem Grlobetrotters yesterday evening in the Saarlandhalle. Technically they are amazing, but I found the show a little bit disappointing
  • Watched Czech Republic against Germany (Euro 2008 qualification) and it was one of the better game. High pace during the entire game. Ordered 5 times 4 tickets for Basel.
