24.6.09 21:00 NVIDIA and KDE4 problems: SOLVED! ( , , , )

KDE4 never really worked on my PC. It was slow, everything was slow, not only effects :-(

I have a NVIDIA 8600 GT, and I was used to compiz, which performed very nice with this grafic card.

I knew there were few possible source of problems:
  1. KDE4
  2. Qt
  3. Nvidia driver
At the beginning of KDE4 (KDE4.0), many performance problems were mentioned with Nvidia drivers, so I didn't invest too much time, just updated KDE 4 with every new version, but it didn't get better. I also tried several Qt tweaks, but still no luck. Same for Nvidia: I downloaded and tested every new version, KDE3 was running very well, even if compiz, but KDE4 was still very very slow.

Few days ago, I found this following entry in openSUSE formens. It suggest to "activate" RenderAccel in sax2 configuration. I don't know if you have ever been in the sax2 driver configuration dialog, but here is what it looks like:

I've also been here a couple of times, but never realized that you can activate/deativate driver options here. "activate" means selections, deactivate means no selection. No very userfriendly and intuitive, I expected to have a checkbox or a true/false option panel or something like that.

However, now everything is fast and I'm enoying all nice desktop effects :-)

Few critics:
  • Why is RenderAccel not activated by default? @suse
  • Fix usability of SaX driver options dialog. @suse
  • I think kde4 should work well also without some features supported by grafikcards. I think RenderAccel is mostly for transparency effects.

11.1.08 21:21 KDE 4.0.0 ( , , , )

So KDE4.0.0 is out. Cool.

We will probably have to wait for 4.1 before seeing it as default desktop (OpenSuse 11.1??), but it already looks quite good.

And for OpenSuse 10.3 it's just one click to install it (coinstall to KDE3, just select KDE4 when login).

10.12.07 21:30 Test KDE4 on OpenSUSE 10.3 ( , , , )

3 steps to test KDE4 on OpenSUSE 10.3 (in parallel to KDE3):
  • Install KDE4 BASE
  • Install KDE4 APPS
  • Switch to console (ALT-F1), login and start KDE4 on second X terminal: "xinit startkde -- :1"
More here.

Christian Ehrlicher has published new KDE4 beta3 windows packages.

Here is the windows installer screenshot:

Umh. none of the applications works after installation. All I got is a message that the "application configutation" is not correct :-(

21.6.07 23:22 Launchy ( , , , )

You like KDE but have to work with Windows? One thing I miss most is the ALT-F2 application laucher. Try Launchy. It's an keystroke launcher for Windows. It index your start menu, documents, files, folders... It's skinnable and so much faster than clicking through the start menu. Obligatory screenshots. While you are there, make a donation, Josh Karlin merits it.

Some cool plugins (and commands):

17.4.07 20:24 Linux USB autostart.sh ( , , , )

To automatically start an application under Linux, all you must do is add an "autostart.sh" file in the root directory of your device. The file can be any executable application, for example a shell script (which I like, better than creating a new file format, as is autostart.inf under Windows).

Sample file:
# Some comments
cd myApplication
./start_my_application.sh

The following appears on my openSUSE 10.2 box:

I wonder why the regular media dialog doesn't appear, with an additional option asking if autorun should be executed (first entry). Maybe if will just browse the media, even when there is an autorun.sh on it.

Not sure who do this, probably one of the KDE services. If you know it, let me a note.

At least an icon still appears on the desktop which can be selected to access the file system ...

10.4.07 23:08 ( , , , )

Kmando: The "Interactive camera-projector sytem" software makes use of a low cost off-the shelf webcam that is calibrated against a standard projector screen. The webcam is used to determine the position of physical pointer (e.g. a pen) which is then used to virtually move the X11 pointer. Point-and-click functionality has also been implemented.

Sounds great, looks cool, and there are also opensuse 10.2 packages. I wish I had a beamer and camera at home.

I just installed kmobiletools and must say I'm VERY impressed.

I had to install obexftp-devel and xmms-lib first (using smart), then I download kdebluetooth1.0beta2 and kmobiletools1.0beta2 rpm packages from here (thanks for building opensuse 10.2 packages).

Some screenshots:

After start, you can easily configure your mobile ...

...using the wizard. It's very easy and worked without any problem with my Nokia 6230i. It tested all bluetooth services (audio, file transfer, sms, serial...) and configured them correctly. No need to entire a PIN (just confirm).

Once configured...

you can list your SMS as well as send SMS...

as well as list contacts (no edit so far). By clicking on a phone number, the number is directly called. Nice :-)

Remark!!! Kmobiletools is still more or less a one-man show. So first, thank you very much to Marco Gulino. And if someone wants to help, see here.

Now waiting for gammu support (more devices), file access and opensync.
