29.12.07 12:50 The Email Standards Project ( , , , )

The Email Standards Project is about working with email client developers and the design community to improve web standards support and accessibility in email.

I'm happy to see that thunderbird has good support and suprised that Outlook 2007 still don't render very well e-mailst. And I'm missing kmail.

Here is the list (as of 29.12.2007):

27.12.07 22:59 GnuPG Celebrates 10 Years ( , , , )

GnuPG: "This very first version was not yet known under the name of GnuPG but dubbed 'g10' as a reference on the German constitution article on freedom of telecommunication (Grundgesetz Artikel 10) and as a pun on the G-10 law which allows the secret services to bypass these constitutional guaranteed freedoms."

23.12.07 12:22 Klik ( , , , )

Good presentation about klik.
I wonder when the first klik only distribution (with a real small LSB base system) will come.

10.12.07 21:30 Test KDE4 on OpenSUSE 10.3 ( , , , )

3 steps to test KDE4 on OpenSUSE 10.3 (in parallel to KDE3):
  • Install KDE4 BASE
  • Install KDE4 APPS
  • Switch to console (ALT-F1), login and start KDE4 on second X terminal: "xinit startkde -- :1"

8.12.07 17:56 Secure and Reliable Web service using Metro/GlassFish and NetBeans IDE 6 ( , , , )

Good screencast from Arun about creating (secure and reliable) WebService with Netbeans 6.

Update: for eclipse, all presentations can be found on one page. Nice. Going through them, I saw one about the embedded rich client platform (slides), which states that it supports Windows Mobile. Of course you first need a JVM on it, which, from my point of view (last time I checked is 2 years ago...), never worked really well (Esmertec(1), Mysaifu (2), IBM J9, ). I still didn't blog about the SUN TechDays, but related to this I can already tell you that SUN is going to release a JVM for Windows Mobile, based on PhoneME. But it will be commercial (as J9, Esmertec). My hope is that SUN will release it under a dual license, making it free for non commercial applications.

(1) seems like Esmertec is part of the Google Android alliance...

5.12.07 23:25 Applet of the day ( , , , )

I discovered today the screen-o-matic service (by watching the new table feature in Impress).
It's an entirely applet based system to record your desktop (with audio support) and play it back. It works great (WinXP,java 1.6.0_u5) for me and it is fast. The GUI could be more slick.

First you must create a recording. A transparent frame (with borders) can then be used to choose the area which you want to record. Then you can upload it (with comments) or export it as quicktime file.

There is a search bar on the top, so you can search for screencasts recorded by other people.

21:35 Soccer, traveling, handball, tech days ( , , , )

I had few nice and not so nice events during last 2 weeks:
  • Drove to Frankfort to watch the soccer game Germany-Wales. Very Boring, still at the end borth Wales and German supporters were singing together "England going home..." :-)
  • Spend a nice week-end by a friend in Düsseldorf (Nachtresidenz)
  • Watched the handball game Germany-Saarland in Saarbrücken (the city where I'm living). Pretty cool, but too expensive (32€)
  • Spend 3 days at the SUN TechDays 2007 in Francfort. I will blog about it later. Saw few people I hadn't seen for a long time (my ex-girlfriend, my cousin and a friend, with whom I had a nice dinner in the Heilligeist/Mainz).
