18:04 Strato IMAP... (

... or how to loose 6 months of email.
Beginning of 2006 I was happy to discover that my e-mail (and domain) provider (Strato) offers IMAP access. Middle of 2006 I changed all my e-mail accesses (home PC, laptop...) to IMAP. Everything was fine. During the next months, I also moved all important mails received on web.de (which I use as public spam filter account) to the Strato inbox. Same for emails that I did send.
Everything looked fine, but few weeks ago I discovered that old mails disappeared from my inbox (sent folder was alright) and I started checking all my e-mail applications (check that "delete mails older than..." is disabled and so on).
Today, I took the time to read the Strato FAQ on strato desk, and there I found my problem:
In short: mails in the inbox, older than 60 days, are automatically deleted. Mails in other folders are not. :-(
I have now created a new inbox folder and moved all files there. As it is an own folder (and not the strato inbox account inbox folder), mails will not (hope so) be deleted. I will use it instead of the original one.
What I've learned: always read the fine print (actually I'm not sure if the limitation did exist when I started using it, and also not if it is written somewhere except the FAQ).Labels: Life
