31.8.05 23:05 Laptop installation ( , , , )

As I wrote in my previous post, my laptop harddisk crashed and I must reinstall it. So what am I installing?. Here is the list (green is open source, red is proprietary/commercial, blue is freeware):
  • Windows XP: yes, I use Windows at work because it's easier (especialy with a laptop) to work in a Windows domain. Second partition: don't know yet. Maybe Kunbuntu. Or OpenSuse.
  • Communication:
    • Outlook
    • Cisco VPN
    • Firefox (ext: scrapbook, switchproxy, forecastfox, justblogit)
    • Thunderbird 1.0.6
    • JAP
    • LeechFTP
    • Nokia PCSuite
    • PGP
    • Skype
    • WinSCP
    • putty, psftp, pscp
  • Office:
    • OpenOffice 2.0
  • Development:
    • Java: JDK 5.0, JDK 6.0
    • Eclipse 3.1 (visual editor, SVN, ...)
    • NVU
  • Tools:
    • 7Zip
    • Acrobat reader
    • Audacity
    • JDictionnary
    • cygwin
    • irfanview
  • Other:
    • Google Earth
    • Intervideo WinDVD
    • TaskSwitch XP
    • filemon
    • iTunes (podcast), RealPlayer, Flash, Windows MEdiaPlayer10
He, not bad, most of my daily applications are open source and free software.

22:27 177, 1919, 2:20, 1600, 1.5 ( , , , )

I'm not blogging a lot those days. The reason is that I'm busy, and regretfully not with programing.

Few numbers to tell you what I'm doing:
  • 177: number of kilometers between me and my girlfriend. She moved to Frankfort for a new job (she will start tomorow, cross fingers). For the next 6 month we will see us only during week-ends :-(, then we will decide what we will do next.
  • 1919: number of calories I burned today with cycling. This was my heaviest trip I ever did. Together with 3 amateur cross mountain bikers we spend 2:20 hours in the forest on the hills of Spichern.
  • 1600: number of kilometers I will probably fly during September. So I have many things to organize (flights, hotels, presentations, designs, ...)
  • 1.5: number of years after which my laptop harddisk crashed. I changed the orignal one (HP) 1 1/2 years ago against a Toshiba disk. This one crashed on Sunday, since then I'm rerinstalling my laptop (Samsumg this time, my preferred disk vendor).
More numbers to come soon. I think it's a good way for me to remember what I want to blog about as in general I can remember better numbers than anything else.

Ah yes, bad new from New Orleans and the region. Hopefuly the international help will be as good as for the tsunami in indean ocean beginning of the year.

14.8.05 23:30 Buying a laptop for my girlfriend ( , , , )

I'm looking for a laptop for my girlfriend. It doesn't need much functionality (word processing, internet, ...). There are some criterias which I use to take my decision:
  • new, not used: on used laptops, you normaly have to buy a new battery. Also you have no warranty...
  • not too old: I want a P-4 minimum, as the laptop is supposed to be used for 3 years
  • it will be used as primary PC, without TFT. So 15' is better than 14.2'
  • WLAN would be good, as she will have (in her new appartment) no other network connection than wireless LAN
  • it should came with Windows XP (yeah, I care about correctly licensed software. No need for Office, as she can use OpenOffice/Thunderbird/Firefox, but as she may use the laptop also in her office, the interoperability is, for non IT people, easier with XP than Linux) but also be able to run Linux (for security issues, I'm too lazy too administer Windows....)
I currently have 2 models left:

HP

Medion

Nx6110

MD95439

Celeron M360, 1,4GHz

M320, 1,3 GHz

256

(256MB kosten 60€)

512MB

15 Zoll, Intel Media , shared memory!!

15 Zoll, shared,

DVD/CD-RW

Externa l DVD/CD...

40 GB

40 GB

802.11g

802.11g

2,7

?

32.9 cm x 26.7 cm x 3 cm

340x287x41/43mm

X Home

XP home

628, redcoo

649 Medion

I prefer HP, as I also have one (n800v), and Linux support is very good (including acpi, centrino wlan...). But 256MB is not much memory. Adding 59€ for additional 256MB, the laptop would cost 687€). This is ~40€ more than the Medion).

What do you think? Can you recommend the nx6110 (I know that the display is not such good)?

UPDATE: I bought the nx6110 (1,4GHz), with 512MB RAM. What convinced me was that it is cheap (618€ + 29€ for additional 256MB RAM) and Linux is very well supported (acpi (suspend-to-ram), wlan (broadcom), bluetooth, dual-head, function keys..). I bought it at Home Of Hardware. Don't know them, hopefully the service is quick and without problems.

6.8.05 18:59 The Perfect Setup - SUSE 9.3 ( , , , )

The article The Perfect Setup - SUSE 9.3 from howtoforge includes a nice apt installation description for Suse 9.3.

rpm -ivh ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/SuSE/9.3-i386/RPMS.suser-rbos/apt-libs-0.5.15cnc7-0.suse093.rb0.i586.rpm
rpm -ivh ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/SuSE/9.3-i386/RPMS.suser-rbos/apt-0.5.15cnc7-0.suse093.rb0.i586.rpm

Edit /etc/apt/sources.list. It should contain the following line:

rpm ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/ SuSE/9.3-i386 base update security

Run

apt-get update

Enjoy the world of apt with Suse.
