24.6.05 09:58 Air France vs. Lufthansa 9 : 6 ( , , , )

I had several middle range flights during a short time, both with Air France and Lufthansa. This gave me the opportunity to compare them. Air France used always Airbus (different types); Lufthansa had Airbus 330 and a Boeing 747-400.

Food 1 : 0
Ok, you can't expect very much on a flight, especially in economy class. Anyway, both where ok, AF a little bit more tasty. Also AF distributes the menu at the beginning of the flight, so it's easier to choose.

Drinks 1 : 1
No big differences for juices and alcoholic drinks (I didn't try all of them :-) . I like both beer and wine, so I choose wine on AF and beer on LH flights, and this is what you should do also. AF has good red
Bordeaux wines, LH good beers (Warsteiner, Beck's).

Multimedia system 2 : 0
All AF flights had personal multimedia systems, allowing you to watch your personal movie, play games, answer a questionnaire and listen to a large choice of music.

Seats: 1 : 1
No big difference. Both use Recaro, I think distance is the same in both. As I'm not very tall, I don't have big problems here.
But as LH doesn't have multimedia system, I wonder why they don't put the newspaper storage on top of the seat back (as I saw in Luxair flights). This way you gain few centimetres for your knees.

"Oreillettes" 1 : 1
I don't know the exact English name for this. I mean the top of the seat where you put your head. "Oreilletes" allows adapting them to your needs. Available in all airplanes.

Service 1 : 1
Both are very friendly, LH more professional, AF more personal contact. The general rule is: be friendly with them and they will be friendly to you.

Foot supports 1 : 0
Not available in LH.

WLAN internet 0 : 1
LH had wlan internet connection on one flight (read my previous post). If it would have been on both I would give 0 : 2.

Atmosphere 1 : 1
Again, no big difference. For me it's always to cold in airplanes, but this may be intentional in order to avoid smells (many peoples in a small room). I think that AF colours (blue) are less aggressive than LH colours (grey+yeloow), but this is a personal opinion, so I don't count it.

Remarks: LH airplanes were generally newer (at least they look newer) than AF, so it's even more disappointing that LH doesn't add cheap comfort equipment, but, probably much expensive, internet connection instead. Stewardess were nice on all flights :-)

Total: Air
France vs. Lufthansa 9 : 6

19.6.05 23:40 Internet at 900 km/hours ( , , , )

I'm right now sitting in the Lufthansa airplane from Frankfurt to Tel Aviv and testing FlyNet, the wireless LAN internet from Lufthansa (strange, the system is from Boing, the plane is an Airbus). One can find the setup description here.

Costs are 10$ for first 60 minutes (not 30 as indicated on the homepage), then 25 cent for each minute. One can use all kind of payments (including credit cards). It's not super fast, but ok, like surfing with a ISDN connection (yeah, it's not fast when you are used to DSL or cable since years).

All the best from somewhere above Croatia :-)

Update: even stranger, on the flight back with an boing 747-400 there was no internet on board (as I mentioned above,m the Airbus had a boing system).

I fluently speak the following languages (meaning I don't have to think a lot when talking, reading or writing them): German, French, English, Java, SQL, shell, regexp, html, xml, pl/sql, ...

What about you?

Isn't it strange that you perfectly understand the meaning of
ls -al | sort -n -r +4
(displays all the files in the current directory sorted by file size) but the grammar of your native language is a mystery for you?

09:43 The Baby Name Wizard: NameVoyager ( , , , )

"The Baby Name Wizard: NameVoyager is an interactive portrait of America's name choices. Start with a "sea" of nearly 5000 names. Type a letter, and you'll zoom in to focus on how that initial has been used over the past century. Then type a few more letters, or a name. Each stripe is a timeline of one name, its width reflecting the name's changing popularity. If a name intrigues you, click on its stripe for a closer look."

Below are the results for name: Jean-Marc (observe the perfect symetrie of 4 letters around the "-" :-)).

"Jean": old

"Marc": relativly new

Picture above are screenshots are tooked of the application running on my PC with my data's. I didn't found any copyright notice on their site, so I assume I can publish them. If not, you can freely contact me and I will remove them.

16.6.05 21:50 Saarland bike tour: Saarbrücken-Spichern ( , , , )

We started in Saarbrücken-City and follow the river upward until reaching Saarbrücken-Unner. Here we crossed the highway (under the bridge) and went to "Zum Stiefsfald". Here you enter the forest and have a 1,5 km hill in front of you which is steeply. Folow the way (Oberst Petersen Weg) until you reach the top of the hill, then straight forward. You will arrive at the Spichern soccer stadium. Turn back, and then the next way right, along the forest. After few kilometers turn left to go back into the forest (very nice place here) and drive downhill until you reach Tiefentallweg. Now join the river again andfolloww it until you reach Saarbrücken again.

15.6.05 22:10 Economical research ( , , , )

Today I had a presentation at the IZFP (Institut für Zerstörungsfreie Prüfverfahren). They do research about materiel quality tests without affecting the material (for example test train wheels for internal tears, pipelines test, radiation test on nano meter level... More information here).

The presentation was done by Prof. Kröning. He had some interesting ideas:

"World is global, also for research and industrie"
"Competition is difficult with current German research organization/thinking (BAT)"
"Knowledge is a product"
"Realization -> Technology -> prototype -> Product"
"Business areas: means also that you knowlingly loose business to concentrate on some specific fields"
"People will buy if you can save them money: examplemple, if a company pay a lot of money for insurance, they will give you some of it if you find a way to lower the insurance (by convincing the insurance that products have been tested and the risk is lower)."
"due to demographic evolution we don't have enoyoungxung people in Germany. This means less innovation and consumption" (remark: he is over 60).

Overall it was a good presentation, it's an interesting world.

12.6.05 22:22 Saarland Fahrrad Tour: Grumbachtahlweg - Stiefel - Am Homburg ( , , , )

Start in Saarbrücken-City, Maizerstrasse until Sachafbrücke. Turn right into the Grumbachtahlweg. Folow it for several miles. Before reaching Sengscheid, turn left into the forest. Here is a nice hill (several kilometers) up to the Stiefel. Drive down in north direction. You will cross the Kaiserstrasse. On the other side, drive into the forest again, turnaround the hill, and exit it near the university. Drive direction Dudweiler, turn left into a residential area. At the end, enter the forest and drive accross until reaching "Am Homburg". Finally back to the city.

10.6.05 17:58 Wink: ( , , , )

Yesterday I have discovered Wink (thanks to Roman Strobl)

What is Wink:
"Wink is a Tutorial and Presentation creation software, primarily aimed at creating tutorials on how to use software (like a tutor for MS-Word/Excel etc). Using Wink you can capture screenshots, add explanations boxes, buttons, titles etc and generate a highly effective tutorial for your users."

Wink is amazing: it's easy, runs on Linux and Windows, and it's free. Exactly what I was looking for. Now I will probably generate from time to time some flash tutorials instead of writing textual articles.

But, if a picture says more than thousand words, a movie probably says more than one million words. Here a short example what you can do with Wink: NVU html page editing.
