Word of the day: diacritic diacritic marks (diaktritische Zeichen) are additional marks added to basic letters. The mark can be added over, under or through the letter. Famous diacritic marks are French accents (é, è, î, ...), and German Umlaute (ä,ö,ü). West European diacritic marks are defined in ISO Latin-1" (ISO 8859-1).
