Eclipse remote profiling

Since a long time I planned to remote profile some Tomcat applications. Few weeks ago, I discovered Eclipse Profiler Plugin, finally I found the time to check it.

Just follow the documentation and install the plugin (btw., I have tested it with Eclipse 3.0M3 on Win2k and Tomcat 4.1.27). Once you have Eclipse running with the plugin and tested the plugin with local applications, add the JAVA_OPTS line to your catalina.bat. Other than described in the documentation, I had too add to the bootclasspath also the ProfilerDLL.dll file. Only putting it in the java runtime directory of Tomcat JVM didn't work.

Here is my JAVA_OPTS entry:

set JAVA_OPTS=-XrunProfilerDLL:1 -Xbootclasspath/a:[pathToDll]/ProfilerDLL.dll;jakarta-regexp.jar;bcel.jar;profiler_trace.jar;commons-lang.jar -D__PROFILER_PACKAGE_FILTER=__A__%MAINCLASS%;__M__sun.;__M__com.sun.;__M__java.;__M__javax.;__M__org.apache. -D__PROFILER_USE_PACKAGE_FILTER=1 -D__PROFILER_TIMING_METHOD=1

As bcel.jar seems to be not used any more you can remove it.

Then start Tomcat using startup.bat (eventually you have to add/set the JAVA_HOME and CATALINA_HOME environment parameters). In Eclipse, choose 'Remote Profiler' and enter the host. Once started, Eclipse will switch in profiling view, connect to the remote profiling port of your Tomcat instance and show you all threads running in it.

VmWare 4 test
Yesterday I tried out VmWare 4 Workstation and I must say I love it. I donwloaded a demo version and a 30 day evaluation key. After few hours I had several OS running on my laptop in parallel. Easy installation, no pitfalls.

Here is a list of use cases I think VmWare is great:

  • you want to try a new OS or Software, but don't want have a free PC or don't want to repartition your harddrive
  • multi version testing
  • OS language: test your Software running on English, Japanese and Hebrew Windows version
  • Installationkit testing: as you can take a snapshot of the system at any time, you can re-test your installation kit installation again in again, each time having exactly the same environment
    - virus manipulation: when you get data's and are not sure what they contain, VmWare is a nice sandbox
  • firewall script tests: as you can add several virtual network cards, you can tests firewalls with ,any network cards without needing the hardware
  • configuration management: ok, you don't have exactly the same installation than you customer, but at least you can save a copy of each version. When a customer complains about an old version, just re-activate it and check his complains
  • markteting: instead of installing many demo laptops for each presentation, do it once and who ever wants to make a presentation can take it. Each presentation will have the same functionality, same data's and you can be sure that it works

Good job VmWare, I just ordered

  • Article: Comparing Word Processors: A Writer's Perspective. And the winner is: WordPerfect. Get the most for your money: StarWriter or TextMaker. Next comes StarWriter 6.1, last places are for MS Word 2003 and OpenOffice. IMHO OpenOffice is not such bad: remember that it is free, PDF export is integrated, Fonts looks great on my PC.

  • Article: Security evaluation of MS .net framework and IBM WebSphere. Conclusion: "@stake found that both the .NET Framework and WebSphere platforms provide comprehensive tools and infrastructure for building secure applications. Both platforms scored well across nearly all of the security areas we analyzed, with the caveat that web services security is not yet standardized, and support in the platforms for them is still relatively immature. Although we found that the .NET Framework scored higher overall, the differences were not large. IBM would have increased its scores if there had been more attention paid to helping developers write secure applications . As a result, companies may find the .NET Framework to be an easier web application platform to secure initially. For firms deciding on which framework to go with, the right choice largely boils down to factors unrelated to security: namely, the existing developer skill base, and the importance of single-vendor versus open technologies.
